District heating and cooling (DHC) networks provide both centralised and localised thermal energy to multiple buildings through insulated pipe systems, improving efficiency and reducing overall energy use. Modern low-temperature, or fifth-generation, district heating and cooling networks operate with near-ambient temperatures. They rely heavily on electric heat pumps and allow buildings to both supply and consume heat or cooling. This bidirectional approach increases flexibility, enables high renewable integration, and represents a key pathway toward sustainable, low-carbon urban energy systems. Renewable-based networks are increasingly important. Biomass-fired plants use organic materials to generate heat, while geothermal networks exploit underground heat for both heating and cooling. Solar thermal systems can also be integrated, particularly for heating, often supported by thermal energy storage to manage seasonal demand.
